A New Path in the Sea with Panerai and Luna Rossa
Panerai is creating a new collection of Panerai watches dedicated to the Luna Rossa Challenge, the Italian team which is the first to challenge the defender of the 36th America’s Cup.
Panerai is partnering with Luna Rossa, the Challenger of Record team which a few months ago was the first to challenge the defender New Zealand for the right to compete in the 36th edition of the America’s Cup. This will be an exciting new Italian story associated with the sea, with excellence and technical innovation taking place.
The agreement, signed by Panerai’s CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué and Patrizio Bertelli, President of Luna Rossa and CEO of the Prada Group – title sponsor of Luna Rossa together with Pirelli – provides that Panerai will be the Official Sponsor of Luna Rossa. Panerai will create a series of watches directly inspired by the technologies and materials used in the America’s Cup, which is the oldest sports competition in the modern world, but also one of the more advanced in terms of research and innovation.
The new Panerai Luna Rossa watches will then be the perfect instruments for life at sea and will be worn by the members of the Luna Rossa Sailing Team headed by Massimiliano “Max” Sirena.
The first watch inspired by the partnership between Panerai and the Challenger of Record of the 36th America’s Cup is the Submersible Luna Rossa, a diving watch water-resistant to a depth of 300 metres (30 bar) with a case made of carbotech, the innovative material based on carbon fibre introduced into the world of high-quality watchmaking by Panerai. The watch has qualities of lightness, resistance to external shocks and freedom from corrosion. The carbon fibre material is also used to make the AC75 monohull, a picture of which is engraved on the titanium back of the watch, together with the Luna Rossa logo and the America’s Cup profile.
The sporty look of the watch comes from the striated matt black appearance of the 47 mm case, which arises from the particular arrangement of the carbon fibres, which makes everything look high tech and very distinctive. The dial holds a special texture that conceals a fascinating secret – the pieces of the sails of the Luna Rossa are applied to the dial itself. When submerged in water, the watch indications can be clearly visible and several details will stand out even more with their red colour.
The new Submersible Luna Rossa is fitted with the P.9010/GMT Manufacture movement, and automatic with a bidirectional oscillating weight and two spring barrels, giving a power reserve of three days. The watch has a second time zone, a date window at 3 o’clock and a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock.
Panerai watches, for many decades used exclusively by the commandos of the Italian Navy in their courageous underwater operations, have a glorious history of heroism in their DNA. The new collection comes in many various designs and was all brought out during this years Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2019.
